
Dawood Public School, established in 1959 by a group of founders including Miss Rumbold, Mr. Nelson, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Prabha Majumdar, Elizabeth, Neil Munshi, Kom Karimunnessa, Mrs. Hamida Dilshad, Aya Kameni, and Pion Pinarom, started its glorious journey from a tin shed store room which later became the Station Club with a view to addressing a specific educational need in Jashore area.
Basically, the initiative to create an English medium school in Jashore was spearheaded by the aviator bet then Cantonment Executive Officer Mohiuddin Jilani. Overcoming numerous challenges, the school commenced its journey on June 15, 1959, starting with a one-room office and two classrooms located under a mango tree in front of the Station Club. The inaugural principal was Miss Kathleen Nightingale Rumbold, an Australian with a missionary background and a descendant of Florence Nightingale.
To establish a more suitable and quality academic environment, a grand ceremony was held on September 3, 1959, where the foundation stone for a new building was laid on 18.71 acres of land in Jashore Cantonment, attended by His Excellency President General Md. Ayub Khan and the affluent Ahmed Dawood Khan, who contributed 600,000 rupee for the construction.
The school was named Dawood Public School in honor of its grantor, Dawood Khan. On June 17, 1961, the school moved into its new building and began conducting classes in English. In 1963, students took the matriculation examination for the first time. Due to its consistent academic excellence, effective administration and disciplined teaching, the institution received approval for college-level education in 1969.
Both the school and college operated concurrently until 1983, when the college section was separated and renamed Cantonment College Jashore, moving to a newly constructed campus. The school again received the approval of the college section by the Ministry of Education and from the year 2015, the activities of the college section started and the name of aviator the institution evolved as Dawood Public School and College.
Last on January 1, 2017, the activities of the primary section of the institution were transferred to the old campus of Jashore English School and College. At present, around 3240 students are studying in the institution and the reputed college continues to shine thousands of new lives in its glory.
